Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that Canada will levy a 25% counter-tariff on vehicles imported from the United States that are not compliant with the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement (USMCA). It is in response to US tariffs on Canadian vehicles and auto parts that went into effect today.
“Our tariffs, though, unlike the US tariffs, will not affect auto parts,” Carney continued, “because we know the benefits of our integrated production system.”
Carney added that the Canadian response will “not affect vehicle content from Mexico,” which the prime minister said is respecting the free trade agreements in place.
“We take these measures reluctantly, and we take them in ways that it’s intended and will cause maximum impact in the United States and minimum impact here in Canada,” Carney said, adding that Canada’s other retaliatory tariffs will remain in place.
